Inertia in dynamic loading delays plate necking, increases material ductility.
A new model was developed to predict when plates will stretch and thin out under fast stretching in two directions. This model considers the effect of inertia, or the resistance to change in motion, on the process. The researchers found that inertia can delay the thinning of plates and make the material seem more flexible. They compared their model to computer simulations and found they matched up well.
