Stand structure impacts understory biomass in Chinese forests, changing ecosystem balance.
The study looked at different types of Quercus spp. forests in Hunan, China, to see how the structure of the forest affects the amount of plants growing underneath. They found that the biomass of plants under the trees was generally low, with some variation between forest types. The factors influencing plant growth varied depending on the type of forest. Adjusting the distribution of trees and the amount of forest cover could help increase the amount of plants growing under the trees.
