Sleeve gastrectomy beats gastric banding in controlling weight and improving health
The study compared the effects of gastric banding (GB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on obese rats. The researchers found that both procedures led to less food intake compared to a control group. However, SG was more effective in controlling weight gain and improving blood lipids than GB. Additionally, SG resulted in a faster decrease in ghrelin levels, a hormone that affects appetite, compared to GB. Leptin levels, another hormone related to weight regulation, also decreased in both groups but showed significant differences between GB and SG. These findings suggest that SG may be more beneficial for weight loss and improving metabolic health in obese individuals compared to GB.
