Sorting food waste in China could prevent overinvestment in incineration.
China is shifting towards using municipal solid waste (MSW) as an energy resource. The focus is on sorting and recycling waste, especially food waste. By analyzing data, it was projected that by 2050, the amount of mixed MSW could range from 159 to 340 million metric tons, with sorted food waste ranging from zero to 109 million metric tons. Sorting food waste can help stabilize mixed MSW levels in many provinces and prevent overinvestment in MSW incineration capacity.
