Global Climate Agreements Fail to Prevent Catastrophic 3°C Warming by 2100
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was signed in 1992 to stabilize greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. The Kyoto Protocol in 1997 set emission reduction targets, but disagreements on sharing costs hindered progress. The Copenhagen Accord in 2009 aimed to limit global warming, but a clear path forward was not agreed upon. Finally, in 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement was signed to limit warming to below 2°C. However, current commitments would still lead to a 3°C increase by 2100, showing a lack of effective action to combat climate change.
