Artificial wetlands significantly reduce urban stormwater pollution levels.
Artificial wetlands can help clean up dirty urban stormwater. A study in London Borough of Sutton showed that a wetland with Typha latifolia plants reduced pollutants like nitrate and total coliforms by around 70-80%. The biggest improvements happened in late spring and early summer when the plants were growing fast. This research suggests that artificial wetlands could be a good way to treat urban stormwater and make it cleaner.
