Mulching boosts crop yield and water efficiency in sandy soils.
The research looked at how different mulching materials affect soil temperature, water use efficiency, and crop production under trickle irrigation. They tested transparent plastic, rice straw, maize straw, and no mulch in sandy soil. Plastic mulch raised soil temperature the most, while rice straw kept it lowest. In summer, rice straw mulch gave the highest maize yield and water use efficiency. In winter, transparent plastic and rice straw mulch led to the best faba bean yield and water use efficiency. Using 8 Mg ha-1 of rice straw mulch in both seasons was recommended for optimal soil temperature and crop yield.
