South Korea's Green GDP Reveals Alarming Environmental Toll, Calls for Urgent Action
The researchers used a method called Emergy analysis to calculate a Green GDP, which considers environmental factors that the traditional GDP does not. In 2010, South Korea's GDP was 913 trillion won, with 32.9 trillion won spent on environmental protection. However, when accounting for natural asset loss, the Green GDP was actually 803.5 trillion won, which is 88.0% of the GDP. This shows that traditional GDP measurements may not fully reflect the impact of environmental degradation and resource depletion on the economy.
