Economic integration increases global business cycle synchronization, leading to instability.
Business cycles of countries in Asia-Pacific and Europe are becoming more synchronized due to lower transportation costs. A method called Spatial GAS was used to measure this synchronization. During economic crises like the Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008, synchronization was high. As countries become more economically integrated, shocks affect neighboring countries more, leading to increased synchronization and economic instability.
