Ice-dammed glacier surge threatens Karakoram village with flooding disaster.
A glacier in the Karakoram Himalaya suddenly grew, creating a deep ice-dammed lake that flooded part of a village. The glacier advanced while another retreated, leading to a 500% increase in lake size in just 6 months. The movement of the glacier was unusual and caused by unknown factors, resulting in high ice and sediment flow. Summer temperatures caused the lake to discharge more water, leading to flooding on a nearby highway.
