Berlin's Urban Forests Emerge as Vital Carbon Sinks, Offsetting City Emissions
Urban areas like Berlin store a lot of carbon in their soils and trees, which helps combat climate change. Researchers estimated that Berlin stores over 24 million tons of carbon, with most of it in the soil. Trees in parks and streets also play a big role in storing carbon. The study used soil samples and tree data to create detailed maps of carbon storage in the city. The suburbs have the highest carbon storage, and the city boundaries have the most overall. This research is the first to combine soil and tree carbon storage in a city, providing valuable information for similar cities.
