Novel technology slashes air pollution from power plants, saving costs.
The scientists are working on a new way to clean up harmful gases from power plants. They want to make a system that can remove a lot of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the smoke that comes out of coal power plants. They plan to use special devices called hollow fiber contactors to do this job. The goal is to clean up more than 95% of SOx and more than 75% of NOx from the smoke, and do it for less money than current methods. They also aim to create useful products from the process, with no waste left over.
