Heavy metal pollution in Chinese river poses serious ecological risks.
The Le'an River in China, near copper mines, is polluted with heavy metals like Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn. Sediment and water samples were collected at different times in 2016 to study this. Heavy metal concentrations vary along the river, with higher levels in the dry season. Flow velocities affect metal distribution. Cd, Pb, Cu, and Cr levels are highest near mining areas in the dry season, but peak near the estuary in wet and normal seasons. Most heavy metals in sediment are in stable forms, except Cd. The river is significantly polluted with Cu, Cd, and Cr. Cd poses the most harm among the heavy metals studied.
