Highly Permeable Aquifers in Imo State Pose Contamination Risk.
The researchers aimed to estimate the water-holding capacity of underground rock layers in Owerri and nearby towns in Imo State. They used a method called Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings to measure the resistance of the rock layers to electric currents. The results showed that the main water-bearing zones are found between the 4th and 6th layers, with good permeability for water movement. The estimated transmissivity values suggest that the underground materials allow water to flow easily. This study demonstrates that surface geophysics can be used to understand how water moves through underground layers, even without traditional testing methods.
