Gender wage gap in Egypt shrinking, but public sector quality concerns remain.
The study looked at the difference in wages between men and women working in the public and private sectors in Egypt from 1998 to 2018. They found that men generally earn less in the public sector compared to the private sector, while women earn more in the public sector, except at the highest levels. Over time, the wage gap between the public and private sectors has decreased for both men and women. The study also showed that the public sector attracts lower-quality men across all wage levels, but attracts higher-quality women at lower wage levels. These findings raise concerns about the quality of public services provided in Egypt.
