Supermarkets slash carbon emissions by 99% with greener refrigerants
The goal was to create a plan for reducing emissions from refrigerants used in the UK food retail sector. They created models to help decide if shops should upgrade to newer, more eco-friendly refrigeration. By analyzing data, they found that spending £6 million per year on upgrades reduced carbon emissions by 71% by 2030 and met regulations. However, this could lead to more breakdowns as old systems are not replaced. When investing £50 million per year, emissions were cut by 93% by 2030, meeting rules early and making systems more reliable. Also, spending at this level led to 99% decarbonization by focusing on reducing emissions rather than cost. Thus, it's crucial to balance between spending and keeping systems working well to have a more sustainable and efficient refrigeration setup.
