Coal-fired power plants use SCR systems to reduce NOx emissions. A model was developed to optimize the operation cost of both the SCR system and the boiler. By adjusting air pressure, volume, and NH3 injection, the total operating cost was minimized using a genetic algorithm. Simulation experiments on a 1000 MW plant showed a decrease in the total cost of operating the boiler and SCR.
