Maize genotypes show potential for higher yields in low nitrogen conditions
Maize lines vary in their ability to use nitrogen efficiently. Researchers studied 32 maize lines in 2017 and 2018 to see how they performed with optimal nitrogen levels and without any nitrogen fertilization. Some lines actually produced higher grain yields without nitrogen than with it, showing high nitrogen usage efficiency. Lines L1 and L23 consistently had higher yields in both conditions, making them promising for future maize breeding to improve nitrogen utilization.
