Weak underwriting capacity hinders Nigerian insurance companies from assuming larger risks.
The goal of the study was to see how the financial performance of non-life insurance companies in Nigeria is affected by their underwriting capacity. The researchers looked at data from 41 insurance companies over 10 years. They found that the combined underwriting capacity variables (reserves, reinsurance use, and shareholders' funds) have a significant impact on financial performance. However, reserves alone did not have a significant influence. This suggests that insurance companies in Nigeria need to focus on increasing their financial strength and planning their underwriting strategies carefully when taking on risks.
