Refrigerants with low global warming potential could revolutionize cooling technology.
In this study, researchers looked at different refrigerants to find ones that are eco-friendly. They used two methods: one based on how refrigerants work in cooling systems, and the other by checking over 56,000 chemicals. The first method showed a tricky balance between how well a refrigerant works and how much space it needs. Changing the cooling system design can make different refrigerants perform similarly. The chemical exploration highlighted about 1,200 chemicals as potential eco-friendly options, with halogenated olefins being the top choice for current systems. However, chemicals like ethers and cyclic compounds could work well in future cooling systems that need higher temperatures.
