Storm events can significantly change the shape of intertidal flats over a short period. By studying eight flats in the Netherlands, researchers found that the timing of tidal flow, wind, waves, and water depth affects how much the bed levels change. These changes can be as big as those seen over years. The wind plays a bigger role than previously thought. The shape of the flats is mainly influenced by when these forces happen, not just how strong they are.
