Polluted Lakes Threaten Millions Relying on China's Massive Water Diversion Project
The study looked at water quality in impounded lakes along a water diversion project in China. By using different methods, they found three groups of lakes with varying water quality. Overall, the lakes had good water quality, improving from upstream to downstream. Upstream lakes had moderate quality in all seasons. Issues to address include high nutrients, turbidity, and suspended solids in some lakes, and high chloride in others. These findings help us understand how water quality changes in different lakes along the project route. Management should focus on specific factors in each group of lakes to maintain good water quality.
