New Method Estimates Irrigation Water Amounts Using Remote Sensing Soil Moisture
The researchers developed a method to estimate how much water is used for irrigation in a part of Spain by using satellite data on soil moisture. They used two different types of high-resolution soil moisture data and a special algorithm to calculate the irrigation amounts. The results showed that their method accurately estimated the irrigation water used in most of the areas studied. The study also found that accurately representing the evapotranspiration process is crucial for determining how much water enters the soil during irrigation.
