Sustainable Development Goals Unsustainable, Harming the Planet's Ecological Limits
The study questions if the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are truly sustainable, focusing on balancing human well-being with environmental limits. By comparing countries' sustainable development scores and ecological footprints, it finds that high scores on SDGs often come with high environmental impact. Further analysis reveals that current SDG achievement comes at the cost of environmental degradation, showing that human development is progressing in an unsustainable way. The research suggests that the current approach of reaching SDGs is not environmentally justifiable and calls for a shift towards more sustainable human development that respects the Earth's ecological capacity.
