Hydropower has been used for thousands of years to generate energy, with over 1,308 GW of capacity worldwide by the end of 2019. This includes 16 GW of new capacity added that year. Most hydropower comes from large storage reservoirs and run-of-the-river systems. Pumped storage units are used to store energy during low demand times and release it during peak periods.
