Tiny soil microbes hold key to ecosystem health and sustainability
The study looked at soil microbes in the Amazon and permafrost to see how small their genomes are and what they do. They found that a group called CPR/Patescibacteria has tiny genomes and similar functions, but they are often overlooked in soil studies. Using metagenome assembled-genomes (MAGs) is better than single-amplified genomes (SAGs) for studying these microbes.
