Industrial restructuring boosts water quality in Shenzhen River catchment.
The study developed a model to see how changing the types of industries in a region affects water resources and quality. Adjusting the industrial structure of a region's economy can help with water shortages, but may not improve water quality. By reducing labor-intensive industries and improving technology in certain sectors, both water balance and quality can be significantly improved. A comprehensive adjustment plan based on these findings was proposed and tested in a simulation to meet water quality standards in the Shenzhen river catchment.
