Zero tillage with mulching boosts wheat yield and reduces nitrogen uptake.
The study looked at how different ways of farming wheat can affect its growth and nitrogen removal. They compared traditional plowing with a method called zero tillage, where the soil is left undisturbed. They found that zero tillage with rice straw mulching gave similar grain yield to traditional plowing, and even had more stable yields. The zero tillage method with mulching also led to better growth and yield traits. Interestingly, the crops in the zero tillage system took up less nitrogen than those in the traditional plowing system. Overall, both traditional plowing and zero tillage with mulching produced the highest wheat yields when 150 kg of nitrogen per hectare was used.
