New cocoa genotypes show promise in drought-stricken regions for cultivation.
The study looked at how different types of cocoa plants respond to not having enough water. They tested 20 types of cocoa plants and found that some were better at handling drought than others. Two types, VTLCH 3 and VTLCH 4, were the most resistant to water stress. These plants had lower reductions in photosynthesis and chlorophyll levels compared to the other types. This means that VTLCH 3 and VTLCH 4 could be good choices for growing cocoa in dry conditions like Tamil Nadu, India.
