Intercropping legumes with maize boosts yield and nutrient uptake in Meghalaya.
A study in Meghalaya looked at how planting different legumes with maize affects their growth and nutrient uptake. They tested mungbean, soybean, and groundnut in different planting patterns. The legumes grew differently when planted with maize, but their harvest index stayed the same. When grown alone, soybean took up the most nitrogen and potassium, while groundnut absorbed the most phosphorus. Overall, planting legumes alone resulted in higher nutrient uptake compared to intercropping with maize.
