Groundwater withdrawals have minimal impact on water levels, study finds.
Groundwater levels were studied in Jeju Island, Korea, to see how pumping water affects them. A special computer model called LSTM was used to predict groundwater levels accurately. If groundwater withdrawals are reduced by 1/3, the groundwater level may rise by 0.06–0.13 meters. If no water is pumped, the level could increase by 0.11–0.38 meters. Overall, the impact of pumping water on groundwater levels in the area was found to be minimal. This information can help plan for future groundwater use in the region.
