Bioreactor landfill maximizes methane production from organic waste, powering communities sustainably.
Researchers investigated a system to manage mixed municipal waste in Italy. They sorted the waste into dry and organic fractions, treating the organic fraction aerobically before landfilling it. The aerobic treatment for 15-30 days increased methane production up to 10 Nm3 per ton. It reduced volatile solids and respirometer index significantly in the first 30 days. The landfill could produce 18.5-21 kWh of electrical energy per ton, depending on leachate recirculation strategies.
