Maize yields skyrocket with legume rotation, transforming farming in Congo
The study evaluated different ways to grow maize with legumes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They tested eight types of maize and two legumes in intercropping and rotation systems. The results showed that planting maize with cowpeas led to higher yields compared to planting with soybeans. Specifically, Mudishi 3-soya and 07SADVE maize varieties had the best results when grown with cowpeas. Overall, rotating maize with legumes like cowpeas and soybeans can significantly increase maize yields and benefit farmers by reducing the need for tilling the soil.
