Scientists developed a new method called adaptive Metropolis-coupled MCMC to help study evolutionary patterns more efficiently. This method runs multiple chains in parallel, with some chains heated to explore the data more effectively. By automatically adjusting the temperature differences between chains, the method improves the exchange of information between chains. The researchers found that this approach outperformed traditional MCMC on various datasets, showing its benefits for phylogenetic analyses. The method has been made available as an open-source package for the BEAST 2 software.
