New Maize Hybrids Show Over 20% Yield Increase Potential in Ethiopia.
The researchers studied maize hybrids to find the best ones for breeding programs. They crossed eight inbred lines to create 28 hybrids and tested them in Eastern Ethiopia. They found that some hybrids had over 20% higher grain yield than standard checks. The best hybrids for kernel weight and number of kernels per row were L3 × L6 and L1 × L4. This shows that using these hybrids could increase maize yield. The findings can help develop high-yielding maize hybrids for commercial use.
