Dairy Farms Emit Staggering Greenhouse Gases, Threatening Climate Goals
Livestock manure management, especially in dairy farms, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Field studies show that methane emissions from anaerobic lagoons are much higher than previously thought, while nitrous oxide emissions from corral and manure piles are also substantial. Current models underestimate these emissions, suggesting that dairy manure systems release more greenhouse gases than previously estimated. Liquid manure systems could be a key area for reducing these emissions.
