Intensive tillage practices decrease wheat yield and soil fertility in India.
The study looked at how different ways of tilling the soil affect the physical properties of the soil and the yield of wheat crops. They compared rotary tillage and conventional tillage in farmlands in India. The results showed that continuous rotary tillage for over 10 years made the soil denser and harder to penetrate, which affected the growth of wheat plants. Wheat grown with conventional tillage had higher grain yield, more grains per spike, longer spikes, and heavier grains compared to wheat grown with rotary tillage. So, using conventional tillage may lead to better wheat crop yields than rotary tillage.
