Global denitrification doubles, emitting more harmful N2O into atmosphere.
Global terrestrial denitrification has doubled from pre-industrial times to 2005, reaching 160 Tg-N year−1, due to increased use of nitrogen fertilizers. The ratio of N2O to (N2O + N2) emitted is approximately 0.08. By reviewing existing literature and compiling a global N budget, researchers estimated these values. This information can help in managing nitrogen flows more effectively.
