Higher nitrogen levels boost crop yield and soil fertility in cereal-pulse system.
Increasing nitrogen levels in crops like finger millet, maize, and field beans can boost grain yield and soil nutrient levels. A study compared different nitrogen levels in rainfed and irrigated conditions, finding that higher nitrogen levels led to higher crop yields, especially in irrigated areas. Soil nitrogen and micronutrient levels increased with nitrogen application, with maize showing the most significant impact. However, phosphorus and potassium levels decreased with higher nitrogen levels. The type of crop grown also influenced soil nutrient status, with different crops affecting soil fertility differently. Overall, higher nitrogen levels can increase crop yield and maintain soil fertility compared to lower levels.
