High genetic variability in cowpea leads to increased yield potential.
Cowpea, a popular legume crop, was studied to understand its yield and growth factors. 22 different varieties were grown and analyzed during the Kharif season. The study found that traits like seed yield per plant, plant height, and pod characteristics showed high genetic variability. These traits were mostly controlled by genes and had a high heritability. Positive correlations were observed between seed yield and certain plant characteristics, while negative correlations were found with others. Traits with high heritability and genetic advance were found to have a lower impact from the environment and directly influenced cowpea yield.
