Chickpea cultivation in India doubles farmers' income and boosts food security.
Chickpea farming in Auraiya District of western UP was studied to understand the costs and profits involved. The researchers found that the cost of cultivation per hectare was around Rs. 27,819.43, with higher costs on larger farms. The cost of production per hectare was Rs. 2,467.42. The input-output ratio ranged from 1:2.46 to 1:1.53. The net income per hectare was Rs. 14,760.57, and the gross income was Rs. 42,580.00. Overall, chickpea cultivation was seen as beneficial for improving food security in India and increasing farmers' income in the study area.
