Water quality in Dongting Lake deteriorates post-TGD, posing ecological risks.
The researchers studied water quality in Dongting Lake, China, from 1991 to 2018. They found that nitrogen and BOD5 levels increased significantly after the Three Gorges Dam was built. The number of abrupt changes in water quality also rose post-dam, indicating a higher risk of deterioration. The pH values were better before the dam, and TN and TP levels were higher than recommended for drinking water. This suggests that the lake's water quality worsened due to pollution and changes in water flow. To improve water quality, controlling nutrient pollution and regulating water flow are crucial.
