Satellite data reveals key to optimizing water use in agriculture.
The researchers used satellite data to estimate how much water crops need in a specific area over time. They focused on the Dwarakeswar river basin and found that the amount of water plants use changes with the seasons. When the fields were empty, less water was needed (66-120 mm/month), but during the growing season and monsoon, more water was used (120-180 mm/month). The study showed that the amount of water plants need is linked to how much they are growing. The results were compared with data from MODIS and matched up well.
