Bioenergy trade set to soar as climate targets tighten, reshaping global energy landscape
In the study, researchers looked at how different ways of fighting climate change can affect the trade of bioenergy around the world. They used data from different models to see what might happen. They found that without climate rules, global bioenergy trade will likely grow over time. However, when strong climate goals are set, the trade of bioenergy increases faster. By 2050, around 10-45 EJ/year of bioenergy could be traded between regions in a scenario aiming for a 2°C temperature goal. This trade could replace a lot of fossil fuel trade, especially oil. In the future, we might see more bioenergy being traded internationally, raising questions about how to handle this growth.
