Soil acidity affects nitrogen retention, impacting crop productivity and environmental health.
The study looked at what happens to nitrogen added to different types of soils in Manitoba. When urea-N was added to acidic soils, nitrite ions built up and some nitrogen was chemically changed. The rate of nitrite production was higher in acid Wellwood soil compared to Pine Ridge soil. Nitrite ions also built up in calcareous Almasippi soil but were eventually changed. Ammonium oxidation was slow in acidic soil. Low pH soils fixed more added nitrogen than high pH soils, with soil organic matter fixing more nitrogen than clay. Adding lime to acidic soils reduced the amount of added nitrogen fixed.
