Unsaturated soils have different water behavior when drying and wetting. A new model was created to better understand this, improving on existing models. This model was tested and found to accurately predict how water moves in capillary barrier systems. The model shows that water retention hysteresis has a big impact on how water moves within these systems, how water breaks through layers, and how evaporation occurs.
