Green manure equals chemical fertilizer for basmati rice productivity and quality.
A study at Punjab Agricultural University looked at how different nitrogen sources affect basmati rice productivity and quality. Green manure provided as much nitrogen as chemical fertilizer, resulting in similar grain yield. Farmyard manure alone led to lower yields. Quality parameters were similar across nitrogen sources, except for brown and milled rice recoveries, which were lower with farmyard manure. Green manure and farmyard manure improved soil nutrients compared to chemical fertilizer. The cost-effectiveness was highest with chemical fertilizer.
