Boosting Chickpea Yield: Key to Improving Global Food Security
The researchers studied 15 types of chickpeas for 2 years to understand how different factors affect the amount of seeds each plant produces. They found that the weight of 1000 seeds and the number of seeds per plant varied the most among the different types. Some traits, like seed number and weight, were more likely to be passed down from parent plants to their offspring. They also discovered that taller plants with more branches and pods tend to produce more seeds. The number of seeds and full pods had the biggest impact on seed yield, making them good indicators for improving chickpea production.
