Regional trade deals could boost global food access by reducing barriers
Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) influence international trade rules and target both politics and economics. This study compiled data from past research on 53 RTAs, focusing on agriculture. It shows that some agreements restrict agricultural trade, but improvements can be made. To enhance trade, future agreements should eliminate barriers on tariff concessions, make rules of origin consistent, limit the use of certain safeguards, ban export subsidies and restrictions, and stick to key SPS principles.
