Geological structures and water flow shape stunning caves in Indonesia
The Suaran Block in the karst of Sangkulirang-Mangkalihat, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, has many caves formed by geological structures like faults and water flow. The researchers studied how these caves were shaped using cave maps and found that the caves were mainly influenced by these geological features. Linear cave passages were formed by fault-fissures and bedding planes, while sinusoidal passages were created by water flow. Some caves were shaped by a combination of both geological structures and water flow. This study helps us understand how caves in this karst area were formed.
